NPA rebels raid police detachment in central Philippines
font size

About 40 New People's Army (NPA) fighters raided a police detachment in Negros Occidental Sunday, taking away some high-powered firearms, Philippine police said.

According to a police report, about 40 NPA rebels raided the first police regional mobile group detachment in a village in Negros Occidental, central Philippines Sunday at 6 a.m. while the two policemen and eight civilian volunteers on duty were eating their breakfast.

Local police said the rebels took away nine high-powered firearms.

No one was hurt in the raid, police said.

The 8,000-strong NPA has been waging a guerrilla campaign on the countryside for nearly four decades. Peace talks between the government and the rebels bogged down in August 2004 after the insurgents protested their inclusion in the United States and European Union lists of terrorists.
