Malaysia has made a new gas discovery at its gas field offshore Sarawak State in eastern Malaysia, Malaysia's state-run oil company Petronas announced on Tuesday.
An exploration well, located some 108 kilometers northwest of Miri City in the state, started its drilling operation in January this year and encountered the gas when it reached 3,273 meters below the sea level, the company said in a press release.
"The well, drilled by PETRONAS in its efforts to discover more gas reserves, encountered a single gas column of 630 meters, which is a new record for Sarawak," it said.
The new discovery had potential for development and it also opened the potential of the surrounding area where several prospects of a similar type have been identified, it added.
The company is optimistic about its continued success in the future in enhancing the country's hydrocarbon reserves.
