EU summit ends with agreement on common energy policy
font size

The European Union (EU) summit concluded here in Brussels on Friday, with EU leaders agreeing to measures for improving economic performance and establishing a common approach on energy policy.

The heads of government from the 25 EU member states approved plans to establish a European energy strategy, which aims to liberalize the energy market in Europe, and deal more effectively with external oil and gas suppliers.

The strategy will also require major investment in renewable energies by EU states to reduce oil dependency.

The summit asked the EU foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana to present a report on foreign policy aspects of energy at a meeting in June.
