The anti-government guerrillas abducted at least 56 people including unarmed security personnel, government officers, teachers and civilians from various parts of Nepal in the past few days, the Ministry of Defense said Saturday.

As many as 50 youths were forcibly taken by the guerrillas from Jogimure and Lamachaur area of Kaski district in western Nepal, some 200 km west of Kathmandu on Friday, the ministry said in a statement.

Similarly, a police inspector and a constable along with two government employees of the Community Service Committee were abducted by the rebels in Makwanpur district in central Nepal, some 50 km south of Kathmandu, on Wednesday.

A civilian was abducted from Gaddachowki area of Mahedranagar Municipality in Kanchanpur district in far western Nepal, some 800 km west of Kathmandu, on Tuesday while a teacher was kidnapped from Manma area in Kalikot district in mid-western Nepal, some 700 km west of Kathmandu, on Sunday, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, 17 guerrillas surrendered before the security forces in Baglung district, some 400 km west of Kathmandu, in western Nepal on Thursday, according to the ministry.
