Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said in Beijing Tuesday that China has successfully contained and eliminated the 35 outbreaks of the bird flu epidemic and achieved initial results in the prevention of the disease.

China has improved its emergency preparedness, strengthened its monitoring and immunization programs, enhanced public awareness and instituted supportive policies for the poultry industry, said Hui at a meeting with David Nabarro, UN co-ordinator for avian and human influenza.

Hui said he appreciates the role of the United Nation system in the prevention and containment of the bird flu epidemic. He asked the international organization to further show its leadership on this issue.

Nabarro said China's timely and effective control of bird flu epidemic contributed to international cooperation on the disease.

Nabarro is here to attend the APEC Symposium on Emerging Infectious Diseases.
