The China-Bangladesh Kite Exhibition opened here Tuesday at National Museum, showing nearly 100 kites from the two countries.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the exhibition, Cultural Counsellor of Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh Liu Sanzhen said, Chinese people used to make wooden flying "eagles" 2,000 years ago.
"Chinese kites came to Bangladesh long ago with the friendly exchange between our two peoples. From this exquisite handicraft art, more and more Bangladeshi people began to know about Chinese culture," he said.
He also expressed confidence that with the constant endeavor of the government and people of the two countries, more and more different forms of cultural exchange activities would be held in the days to come, which will be conductive to the consolidation and further development of the friendly relations and cooperation between China and Bangladesh.
The exhibition is jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Dhakabashi Organization, which is a socio-cultural voluntary organization engaged in upholding tradition and cultural heritage of Dhaka city.
The exhibition will last for two days.
According to historical records, kites are also regarded by scientists as ancestors of airplanes and are considered as another invention along with the "Four Great Inventions" in the Chinese history. Around the year 510, Chinese kites were exported to Korea and later to Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe and America. People all over the world have accepted and improved Chinese kites to suit their local conditions and tastes.
