Former Peruvian president marries Japanese girlfriend
font size

Peru's former president Alberto Fujimori, now jailed in Chile, has married his Japanese girlfriend Satomi Kataoka by filing marriage registration in Tokyo, the bride announced here late Wednesday.

Kataoka, a hotel owner, who arrived in Lima on Wednesday, said that "I'm determined to stake my life on protecting him."

Fujimori, who was awaiting extradition to Peru, called the day of the marriage "the happiest day of my life."

Under Japanese law, couples can be wed by submitting legal documents to a local marriage registration office either by themselves or by a representative.

Fujimori, 67, fled to Japan in 2000 amid a corruption scandal. After a five-year exile in Tokyo, Fujimori was arrested Last November upon his arrival in Chilean capital Santiago.

He had intended to return to Peru for presidential election, although he was barred from being a candidate.
