Beijing as Olympic city should improve social ethics
font size

Beijing, as host city for the 2008 Olympic Games, should improve its social ethics with the President's list of honors and disgraces as a guideline.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said this on Thursday after making a three-day inspection on local communities, high-tech zones and cultural units.

In the Chinese language the list of eight honors and disgraces rolls easily off the tongue and reads as a list of pairs of opposing moral values.

-- Love the country; do it no harm

-- Serve the people; do no disservice.

-- Follow science; leave ignorance behind.

-- Be diligent; not indolent.

-- Be united, help each other; make no gains at other's expense

-- Be honest and trustworthy; do not spend ethics for profits

-- Be disciplined and law-abiding; not chaotic and lawless.

-- Live plainly, struggle hard; do not wallow in luxuries and pleasures.

The list of eight do's and don't's should be taken as a guide to improve citizen's behavior and create a sound social atmosphere for the Olympic Games, Li said.

He also urged the list to be written into textbooks and taught in classrooms. The list should also be better promoted among common people, Li said.

Beijing has seen rapid progress in the cultural sector during recent cultural reforms, Li said while inspecting local cultural centers, museums, and Zhong Guancun a high-tech development zone, known as the Silicon Valley in China.

The success of the cultural industry in Beijing proved that the national culture will transform into a competitive culture only by combining it with modern science and technology and by adopting an industry-oriented development strategy, he said.

China should further increase the market share of its national culture products, and encourage the Chinese national culture products to step on to the world stage, Li said.

He noted that China should develop its knowledge-oriented economy, support and cultivate creative culture industries and establish a group of well-known brands that hold independent intellectual property.

Li also stressed that more attention should be paid to the construction of cultural infrastructure, and new ways should be explored to develop cultural service units for the benefits of the public.

During his inspection, Li also went to visit Qianlong. com, a public website specializing in local news. Noting that the Internet is playing a more important role in people's daily life, he stressed that the local websites should operate in line with the list of honors and disgraces, and resist uncivilized activities that go against the moral standard.
