Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on Saturday urged all political parties that have won parliamentary seats in recent legislative elections to jointly work for national unity and stability.
The political force that has possibly won the majority seats in the parliament should unite with all other parties that have gained entry into parliament in efforts to settle their internal differences, said the president in a broadcast speech.
The faction that holds majority seats in parliament should make it a primary goal to safeguard national interests, be dedicated to solving problems related to national unification and security, promote national and regional economic development, and improve people's livelihood and welfare, he said.
A government to be put together by the majority faction will be one for all Ukrainians, and not one that will only serve its own supporters, Yushchenko noted.
He hoped that the majority party in parliament would work out a national development plan to facilitate economic development, tap and use the resources in a rational way, safeguard legislative authority and promote reforms on the country's health, education and legal systems.
Ukraine held legislative elections on March 26, with preliminary results showing five parties have won seats in the 450-seat parliament.
Formal results are expected to be released by the electoral commission soon. According to constitutional amendments that took effect at the beginning of this year, the party or party-coalition that wins a majority will name a prime minister and form the cabinet.
