At least 20 missing in boat capsize in Bangladesh
font size

At least 20 people were missing as a mechanized boat carrying passengers and goods sank in the mighty river Meghna near northeastern Bhairab river port Saturday night, police said Sunday.

When contacted by telephone, Bhairab police said the boat, coming to Ashuganj from a distant Ajmirganj in northeastern Bangladesh, was carrying goods and about 30 to 35 passengers. The boat sank after it was caught in a rough weather.

Police could not confirm about casualty. They only said it might have capsized due to overloading beyond its sanctioned capacity.

When asked about rescue operation, police said local people are searching for the missing people, but the bad weather and strong current of the mighty Meghna are hampering the rescue operation.
