7 killed, over 1,000 injured as tornado hits Bangladesh

Seven persons were killed and over 1, 000 others injured as tornado and tropical storm hit parts of western, northern and central Bangladesh Saturday, officials and local reporters said Sunday.

Officials reached by telephone said three persons were killed, and several hundreds were injured as a tornado ripped through Bhuapur sub-district of northern Tangail district, 96 km from Dhaka, Saturday evening.

The officials said many houses were flattened by the short- lived tornado that lashed the sub-district. The tornado badly damaged crops on land, they said, adding "we cannot give you the extent actual damage."

A local reporter of a Dhaka-based news agency said two persons were killed and over 200 others injured in Ullapara sub-district of western Sirajganj district Saturday afternoon as tropical storm swept through the sub-district damaging innumerable thatched houses.

Officials have started relief operation in the affected area, he said.
