Italy kicks off general election

Italians went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new parliament for the first time in five years.

Some 50 million Italians are eligible to vote in the two-day general election.

The 60,000 polling stations around the country open from 8:00 a.m. (0600 GMT) to 10:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Sunday, and from 7:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) to 3:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Monday.
