Tokyo stocks fell on Monday with selling prompted by wariness over the fast pace of their recent rises and Wall Street losses Friday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 106.79 points, or 0.61 percent, to 17,456.58.

The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 6.38 points, or 0.36 percent, to 1,777. 34.

Consumer finance, insurance, warehousing and real estate issues were major losers of the day.

Declining issues led advancing ones 863 to 704, with 127 shares ending unchanged.

Trading volume on the TSE's main section came to 1,812.40 million shares against Friday's 1,893.79 million.

NEC was the day's volume leader, up 24 yen to 916 yen.

Softbank was the most heavily traded issue by value, falling 70 yen to 3,370 yen.

The TSE's Second Section index gained 17.51 points, or 0.34 percent, to 5,161.82 on a volume of 120.29 million shares. In Osaka, the near-term June Nikkei 225 index futures contract dropped 70 points to 17,490.
