Tokyo stocks fallTokyo stocks fell Tuesday as high- tech and other recent major gainers were sold, but the losses were limited due to gains in resource issues on a rise in oil and commodities prices. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 38.45 points, or 0.22 percent, to 17,418.13. The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped 7.16 points, or 0.40 percent, to 1, 770.18. Nippon Sheet Glass was the day's volume leader, up 6 yen to 755 yen. Mizuho Financial Group was the most heavily traded issue by value. It rose 10,000 yen to 1,020,000 yen. Declining issues outpaced advancing ones 1,128 to 466, with 99 shares ending unchanged. Trading volume on the TSE's main section came to 1,880.14 million shares against Monday's 1,812.40 million. The TSE's Second Section index lost 7.77 points, or 0.15 percent, to 5,154.05 on a volume of 147.52 million shares.
