State-level news websites respond to call for clean cyber space

A batch of major state-level news websites including People.com.cn recently responded to a proposal by a dozen of Beijing-based Internet portals on Apr.9 for the industry's joint efforts to clean their Websites off unhealthy contents, especially messages of sex and violence.

With more than 700,000 websites and 110 million netizens, Internet in China has become a basic tool of information society, a hub of all kinds of messages and a form of mass media which is of great influence and potential. A clean cyber space is closely related with the national stability and development, the building of socialist spiritual civilization and a sound cultural environment for our millions of youngsters.

Statecentral-level news websites, as the main channels and sources of online news and the major force in guiding online opinions, expressed their strong support for the proposal, as well as their determination to play a positive role in safeguarding social stability, raising cultural quality of the people and building a harmonious society by cleaning Net environment and saying "no" to indecent behaviours.

Websites responding to the proposal include: People.com.cn, Xinhuanet. China.com.cn, CCTV.com, Chinadaily.com.cn, CRI Online, youth.com, China Economic Information Network, Chinanews.com, CNR.cn and gmw.cn.
