Indian Railways registered an over 10 percent growth in freight traffic in the 2005-06 fiscal ended March 31, with a total of 667.39 million tones.

This is marginally below the enhanced target of 668 million tones, according to official data released Wednesday.

The railways "have carried 667.39 million tones of revenue earning freight traffic during the financial year 2005-06. The freight carried shows an increase of 10.72 percent over the freight traffic of 602.78 million tones actually carried during the corresponding period last year," the statement said.

The revised target for fiscal 2005-06 was 668.00 million tones, up from 635 million tones set at the beginning of the year. The target for current 2006-07 fiscal has been set at 726 million tones.
