London mayor says terrorist attacks will be work of individuals

Visiting London Mayor Ken Livingstone said in Beijing Tuesday that future terrorist attacks were more likely to be the work of individuals rather than organizations.

Livingstone called for more attention to be paid to this phenomenon.

A British newspaper has reported the official inquiry into last year's July 7 London bombings would reveal the attacks were not linked to al-Qaida.

Asked to comment on the news report, Livingstone said he was unsurprised at the conclusion as he believed the bombings were unrelated to the work of any terrorist organizations.

The attacks were the product of a "simple and inexpensive" plot hatched up by four British suicide bombers bent on martyrdom rather than an international terror network, the newspaper quoted the still unpublished government report as saying.

The suicide attacks were planned on a shoestring budget with information from the Internet. There was no "fifth bomber" and no direct support from al-Qaida, although two of the bombers had visited Pakistan, the report said.

The four blasts in London underground stations and a double-decker bus killed more than 50 people and injured 700.

The London mayor predicted that terrorist acts in future would be conducted mainly by individuals. "We should pay great attention to it," Livingstone said.
