Tanzania's current account deficit rose in February to 90.6 million U.S. dollars, from 79.5 million dollars in the previous month, according to a report released by its central bank.
A Bank of Tanzania monthly report said that exports of goods in February were worth 133.8 million dollars whereas imports of goods in the same month were worth 246 million dollars, widening the current account deficit.
Exports of goods in January were worth 153.9 million dollars while imports of goods in January were worth 231.9 million dollars.
"During February, the current account deficit widened largely due to a seasonal decline in exports of goods and services," said the bank report.
The bank said that earnings from traditional exports of tea, coffee, cotton, tobacco and cashew nuts dropped to 19.4 million dollars in February, compared with 42.4 million dollars in January.
Non-traditional exports of minerals and manufactured goods rose marginally to 114.4 million dollars in February compared with 111. 6 million dollars in the previous month.
Tanzania's major economic sectors include agriculture, tourism and mining.
