At least seven security personnel were killed when unidentified men attacked their convoy in the North Waziristan tribal region on Thursday, the Geo TV reported.

The convoy was attacked when it was on its way from Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, to Razmak, a town in the region, at 7 a.m., according to the Geo TV.

The attackers used rockets and other weapons to target the convoy of security forces when it was passing a mountainous Sarobi area.

The Geo TV said that 24 other security personnel were also injured in one of the deadliest attacks in recent months.

Witnesses said that the security forces launched an operation against the suspects soon after the attack. They said that the gun- ship helicopters were also seen flying in the area.

There was no official word on the attack.

The injured were shifted to a military hospital in Bannu, a city close to the tribal region, the Geo TV said.

In another incident, several rockets were also fired in a fort of local militia in Mir Ali, another major town in North Waziristan early Thursday. No one was hurt in the attack.

Rockets were also fired on another fort of security forces in Miranshah Wednesday night. Three rockets landed near the fort.

The security forces shelled suspected hideouts after the attack and the operation was continued for two hours. The security forces also used artillery in retaliatory firing.

Suspected militants have intensified their attacks in North and South Waziristan tribal regions in recent months.
