A foreign suspected militant on Thursday was killed after suspected militants opened fire on security personnel near a checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan's Bajur tribal region, army officials said.
When a car of suspected militants was signaled to stop at a check post, the militants opened fire on local security men, killing one at the scene and injuring two others, said military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan.
The spokesman confirmed the death of a foreign national but said efforts were underway to identify him.
According to a witness, the slain foreigner might be Abu Marwan al-Suri, a al-Qaida man wanted by the United States, who was believed to be killed in a U.S. missile strike in Bajur in January.
Abu Marwan al-Suri was thought to be in-charge of al-Qaida operations in Waziristan tribal region.
