Chronology: Key events of Chinese leaders' visits to Africa

Chinese President Hu Jintao is expected to arrive in Morocco on Monday to continue his five-nation tour, which will also take him to Nigeria and Kenya.

Following is a chronology of key events of Chinese leaders' visits to African countries in recent years.

April 16 to April 28, 2001 -- Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) pays an official goodwill visit to Mauritius, South Africa and Morocco.

Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, Nov. 15 to 17, 2001 -- Chinese top legislator Li Peng pays an official visit to north Africa, including Algeria and Tunisia.

April 13 to April 18, 2002 -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin pays a state visit to Libya, Nigeria and Tunisia. During the visit, China signs many cooperation agreements with the three countries in such areas as economy, trade, culture, agriculture, science and technology, education, oil and gas, communication and transportation.

April 19 to April 26, 2002 -- Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji pays an official visit to Egypt and Kenya., during which China signs a series of cooperation agreements with the two nations in trade, agriculture, technology and education field.

Aug. 25 to Sept.. 6, 2002 -- Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji pays an official visit to Algeria, Morocco and Cameroon. He also pays a working visit to South Africa and attend the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, the largest city of the country. During the visit, China signed over 10 documents with the four countries to strengthen cooperation in many fields such as economy, science and technology and culture.

Feb. 9 to Feb. 19, 2003 -- Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) pays an official goodwill visit to Tanzania and Namibia and Zambia.

Dec. 14 to Dec. 16, 2003 -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pays an official visit to Ethiopia, during which he attends the opening ceremony of the Second Ministerial Conference of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum held in Addis Ababa, capital of the county.

At the opening ceremony, Wen proposes that China and African countries should support each other, coordinate standpoint and deepen cooperation and calls on the international community to pay more attention to peace and development of Africa.

Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, 2004 -- Chinese President Hu Jintao pays a state visit to Egypt, Gabon and Algeria. During the visit, Hu exchanges views on strengthening bilateral relations and signs more than 10 cooperation documents with the leaders of the three countries. When visiting Gabon, Hu puts forward proposals for deepening all-around Sino-African cooperation and promoting common development under the new circumstances.

Oct. 29 to Nov. 8, 2004 -- Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) pays an official goodwill visit to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Nigeria.

Sept. 4 to Sept. 6, 2005 -- Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) pays an official goodwill visit to Morocco.
