Russia condemned the terrorist bombings in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Dahab, its Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said on Tuesday.

Moscow "offers deep condolences to the next-of-kin of those killed and injured," he said.

"We strongly condemn an extremist attack that claimed the lives of innocent people. The plot of this attack is evident. The terrorists tried to shake loose the situation in the country -- a leader of the Arab world -- and aggravate the situation in the Middle East in general," Kamynin said.

Russia "confirms its readiness to pool efforts with the world community in counteracting international terrorism and [showing] its solidarity with Egypt in fighting this evil," he said.

The Russian embassy in Egypt "is taking efforts to gather and clarify information about Russian tourists," he said.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday, expressing condolences to the victims, according to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Lavrov said that Russia resolutely and unequivocally condemned such acts.

"There are citizens of many countries, including Russia, among the victims. The tragedy prompted the need for further consolidation of efforts in the struggle against terrorism. We appreciate our contacts with Egypt in this field, and are prepared to broaden them," Lavrov said.

The blasts in Dahab late on Monday killed at least 23 people, including three foreigners, and wounded some 87 others.
