An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's Simeulue island early Wednesday, causing panic among residents.
National news agency Antara reported the quake hit the island at 01:26 local time (18:26 GMT Tuesday), but there was no report of casualties.
The island is located near Aceh province where more than 130, 000 were killed in an earthquake-triggered tsunami on Dec. 24, 2004.
Local geophysics office head Syahnan was quoted as saying the epicenter of the earthquake was located beneath the sea, around 87 km off the island.
