Zambia on behalf of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has signed a 3.6 million U.S. dollar agreement with Nordic countries aimed at further improving the management and development of the shared water resources.

The two-year financial agreement is a final phase in the formulations of the Integrated Water Resources management (IWRM) strategy for the Zambezi river basin, Times of Zambia reported Friday.

Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Christina Rehlen, who signed the agreement Thursday on behalf of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, said the three countries have been engaged in the water sector in the SADC region for many years and that they support the initiative since 1990s and the signing brings to the total amount of grant to about 7.4 million dollars for the project.

The project will help the environmental monitoring program for Lake Kariba and assist the authority to produce and implement a program for monitoring and managing the water quality and pollution into Lake Kariba, the second biggest man-dug lake in the world shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe.
