font size

Over 10,000 Kyrgyz citizens Friday gathered in Bishkek's main square, calling for constitutional reforms and a fight against corruption, according to reports from Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The official Kirghiz Telegraph Agency reported that the gathering was organized by the People Democratic Force Alliance, comprising more than 30 political parties and non-governmental organizations.

An organizer of the rally, Omurbek Tekebayev, a former parliament speaker, said the rally was organized legally. The protestors mainly called on their country to carry out constitutional reforms, fight against corruption and organized crime, and sack unqualified senior officials.

Kyrgyzstan's President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and Prime Minister Felix Kulov made speeches in the square, saying that they would always support Kyrgyz people, pay much attention to their demands and solve the problems gradually.

The protestors dispersed peacefully after the president and prime minister addressed the crowd.

About 5,000 policemen with helmets and truncheons were on standby to protect the White House, the seat of government, but there were no violent incidents.
