Taiwan's largest steelmaker's sales, earnings drop in April

The sales and earnings of China Steel Corp, Taiwan's largest steelmaker, both fell in April from the March level, according to the company's announcement reaching here from Taipei on Wednesday.

According to China Steel's statistics, the company sold some 817,700 metric tons of steel last month, down by 78,000 metric tons from the March level. Its April revenues dropped by 1.2 billion new Taiwan dollars to nearly 13.1 billion new Taiwan dollars, while its April profits hit around 2.48 billion new Taiwan dollars, down from March's 2.84 billion new Taiwan dollars.

The company had a combined business revenue of 50.9 billion new Taiwan dollars (1.6 billion U.S. dollars) for the first four months of this year, reflecting earnings of 8.98 billion new Taiwan dollars and pre-tax earnings per share of 0.84 new Taiwan dollar, the company's tallies show.
