Nearly 100 civilians, including two Americans, have entered Indonesian territory after riots involving Timor Leste ex-soldiers which caused unrest in the world's newest country, Indonesian immigration authorities said Friday.
"Until Thursday evening, there have been 86 Indonesians, eight Timor Leste citizens, two Americans and a South Korean entering the (Indonesian) territory via the Mota Ain gate," said Slamet Santoso, head of Atambua immigration office in East Nusa Tenggara province, which shares border with Timor Leste.
Based on their reports, they left Timor Leste for fear that the violent protest by hundreds of ex-soldiers would develop into national unrest, following reports that at least four people were killed in the April 28 riot, Slamet was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying.
The Comoro International Airport in the Timor Leste capital of Dili was reportedly shut down on Thursday.
Timor Leste has been in tense over the last several weeks following the sacking of 593 soldiers last month.
About 100 active soldiers reportedly have deserted their units and joined the protests.
