Zambian Minister of Lands Gladys Nyirongo has accused the Malawi government of allowing its citizens to encroach on lands in the country's Eastern province that bordering the two countries.

The minister was quoted by Friday's Times of Zambia as saying Malawi had disregarded international laws by allowing its farmers to grow tobacco on Zambian soil.

"Zambia and Malawi share an 800-km boundary but only 200 km was worked on in terms of putting beacons three years ago which had been removed and were being used as stools by Malawians," Nyirongo told a local radio program on Thursday.

She further noted that not only was the Zambian land used for tobacco growing but also the Malawian immigration offices had been constructed there.

The minister said a brief was being prepared on the matter before avoidable wrangles between the two governments.
