Singapore leaders Sunday expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the general election and they thanked residents in their respective constituencies, according to Channel NewsAsia reports.

Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng called the result a very good win for the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, adding that the party hoped to get the support from those who voted for the opposition parties.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said that Lee has won a resounding victory because it is overwhelming for him to get 66.6 percent of the votes in his first general election since he became the Prime Minister in August 2004.

The PAP won 82 of the 84 parliamentary seats in Singapore's 10th general election held on Saturday while the Workers' Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance retained one seat each. The result is the same as that in the last general election held in November 2001.

Established in 1954, the PAP has won all the general elections and stayed in power since Singapore's independence from Malaysia in 1965.
