At least three children have died of kalaazar in the Narayani Sub-regional Hospital (NSH) in central Nepal, NSH confirmed here Wednesday.

"At least three children, age of 14, 11 and nine, died while undergoing treatment at the NSH in Birgunj city of Bara district, some 100 south of Kathmandu" on Tuesday, the government-run hospital said in a press statement.

A total of six kalaazar patients have returned home after treatment from the hospital, it said.

However, many people in the area are likely to contract kalaazar if preventive measures are not adopted immediately, the statement added.

Meanwhile, a total of 15 other kalaazar patients have been admitted to the Gaur Hospital at Gaur city of Rautahat district, neighboring Bara district.

According to Ram Shankar Thakur, chief of the Gaur hospital, the disease has affected Prempur Gonahi, Dipahi, Dumariya villages of the district, among others.
