China and the United States should work together to promote bilateral relations in the spirit of "communication, coordination and cooperation," an expert said on Thursday.
Zheng Bijian, chairman of the China Reform Forum, a non-government and non-profit think tank, said that China, as a nation playing an increasingly crucial role in the international arena, and the United States, as the only super power in the world, should enhance communication and exchanges on the strategic issues.
"The increase of communication could help the two sides to expand mutual trust and reduce misunderstanding," said Zheng.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick held two rounds of strategic talks in August and December 2005 on issues including trade, intellectual property protection, the Taiwan issue, bird flu, the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the RMB exchange rate.
"China and the United States need more of these kinds of dialogues, which are a very good platform for both sides to make exchanges," Zheng acknowledged.
In order to overcome the economic and trade frictions between the two nations, China and the United States should make joint efforts to bar politicizing the economic and trade issues and respect each other's domestic situation, Zheng said.
Zheng said the two nations should enhance coordination, stem conflicts and achieve positive results in regional issues. The Sino-US, long-term peaceful coexistence is conducive not only to the two countries themselves, but to the Asia-Pacific region.
The two nations should also increase their cooperation in the non-traditional security fields, Zheng said, noting that such cooperation could help remove suspicion between the two sides.
The Sino-U.S. relations is becoming increasingly mature, the expert said, stressing that communication in strategic issues and in the economy, trade and energy fields, coordination in regional issues and cooperation in non-traditional security issues would aid the future growth of Sino-U.S. relations.
