The Communist Party Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) lawmaker, Subash Nemwang, has been elected unopposed to post of Nepali Speaker of the House of Representatives on Saturday.
Only Nemwang's name was registered for the candidacy of HoR Speaker in the Parliament Secretariat Saturday.
Nemwang's candidacy was proposed by the Nepali Congress ( Democratic) party member of Parliament Tek Bahadur Chowkhyal while Benup Raj Prasai (NC), Rajendra Pandey (UML) and Lila Mani Pokherl of the United Peoples' Front have supported it.
After differences had erupted among the Seven Party Alliance leaders over the appointment of the Speaker, between Nemwang and Chitra Lekha Yadav, the Deputy Speaker, for the Speaker's post, the HoR had scheduled an election for 2 p.m. (0815 GMT) Saturday, to sort out the confusion.
Yadav who has been chairing the HoR in absence of a Speaker will make the official announcement of the election and swear-in the new Speaker later Saturday at the HoR meeting.
The post of the HoR Speaker has remained vacant after previous Speaker Tara Nath Ranavat resigned on April 26, following the Royal announcement to reinstate the house.
Now that the debate over the appointment of the Speaker is over, expansion of the Cabinet of Ministers is also expected by Saturday evening.
