Breaking the tradition, the newly elected Nepali Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Subash Nemwang took oath of office in the parliament on Saturday.
In the past, the Speaker of the HoR will be sworn in by the King Gyanendra at the Royal Palace even as the constitution of 1990 does not specifically mention by whom the Speaker should be sworn in.
Nemwang was elected unopposed to the post of Speaker of the reconvened parliament Saturday morning. Deputy Speaker Chitra Lekha Yadav announced that Nemwang had been elected unopposed to the post.
He was the sole candidate for the post.
A former minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Nemwang was elected in the parliament for the first time in 1999.
The post of the HoR Speaker has remained vacant after previous Speaker Tara Nath Ranavat resigned on April 26, following the Royal announcement to reinstate the house.
