Brussels mulls limiting car use to reduce air pollution
font size

The Brussels regional authorities have proposed a series of measures to tackle air pollution in the Belgian capital, including limiting car use.

Under the initiative called Brussel'Air, when air quality levels are very low, the number of cars on roads will be reduced by only allowing cars into the city center with number plates ending in an even or uneven number, said VRT news.

"We know we're not making ourselves popular," the Brussels Transport Minister Pascal Smet was quoted as saying.

"However, the poorest air quality levels which would lead to cars being barred have only occurred once in the past five years."

Air quality levels in Brussels are among the poorest in the world. The busy traffic is the main culprit.
