U.S. girl jailed for 12 years for trying to poison classmates
font size

A U.S. teenage girl from Lakeview, Oregon state, who was convicted of attempting to kill two classmates with rat poison, was sentenced to up to 12 years in a juvenile detention center on Saturday.

The judge ruled that the 13-year-old girl, named Holley Sweeney, must stay at the Hillcrest Girls' School in Salem until she is 25 with early release possible if she responds to treatment.

Sweeney and one of her friends were found guilty earlier this month of plotting to kill two classmates they disliked, by slipping rat poison into their milk during lunch last September, in an apparent reprisal for them putting shaving cream in their hair at a slumber party.

The victims, who later noticed crystalline pellets on their milk cartons, were not injured.

Sweeney's friend will be sentenced on May 22. Both girls testified that they wanted the victims dead.
