Senior Chinese party official meets Nigerian guests

China will work with Nigeria to raise bilateral relations to a new level, said a senior official with the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Monday.

Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting with a delegation of the People's Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDPN) led by the party's vice chairman Barrister Ibrahim Shema.

Wu said China and Nigeria, since forging diplomatic ties 35 years ago, have witnessed stable development of bilateral relations, maintaining frequent high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in politics, economy, culture, science and technology.

Chinese President Hu Jintao made a successful visit to Nigeria last month, and reached important consensus with his Nigerian counterpart Olusegun Obasanjo on deepening bilateral strategic partnership during their fruitful talks, Wu noted.

Wu hoped that the two countries would work together and take concrete measures to promote the China-Nigeria mutually-beneficial cooperation.

Wu also spoke highly of the party-to-party relations between the two countries, saying that the CPC is ready to enhance relations with the PDPN and other Nigerian political parties.

China will carry forward the tradition of China-Africa friendship, and work for promoting the China-Africa new-type strategic partnership, Wu said, noting that China will work together with African countries to advance China-Africa relations.

Shema said the development of Nigeria-China relations accords with the interests of the two peoples.

During Chinese President Hu Jintao's successful visit to Nigeria last month, the two presidents exchanged in-depth views on the common interests and future cooperation between the two countries, which added to the solid foundation for the development of bilateral relations, he said.

Expressing appreciation for China to conduct sincere cooperation with Nigeria, Shema said the Nigerian government is ready to further increase exchanges with China to enhance the friendly cooperation between the two nations.

Shema and his delegation arrived on Saturday for an 11-day visit to China at the invitation of the CPC.
