China on Monday expressed condolences to the Nigerian people for a pipeline explosion in Nigeria on Friday that claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

"We extend our sympathy and condolences to the Nigerian people, particularly the families of the dead in the oil pipeline blast," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

More than 200 people were burnt to death in a pipeline explosion at Isanki Island on the outskirts of Nigeria's economic capital Lagos on Friday.

No Chinese were killed in the blast, according to China's Foreign Ministry.
