US does not trust Chen Shui-bian any more
font size

Chen Shui-bian's 'getting lost journey' that shocked the Taiwan media has finally ended. The people in Taiwan can have a relief now. Otherwise, no one knows how Taiwan's decency will be damaged by Chen's behavior.

An article carried on People's Daily analyzed that Chen wanted to express a sad feeling that he was sort of being oppressed by the mainland in order to arouse some sympathy from America. But he also wanted to set an image of 'a strong man' in front of American government.

However, US deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick recently testified in the House of Representatives that the US didn't ask China about which city Chen Shui-bian could go as a transit. It is completely the US own decision. He added that in the past the US had given Chen a chance to stay shortly in America as a transit. But why didn't the US give Chen a chance this time?

Zoellick didn't give details about this, but he continued to say that in diplomatic field, 'it is important to keep your promise no matter under what precondition. But for the Taiwan leader, after he made promise, he tried to break it again'. It's not hard to imagine whom Mr. Zoellick referred.

At the end of February, Chen Shui-bian ignored the US warning and abandoned his solid promises in "Four No's Plus One" policy (of not declaring independence, not changing the national title, not pushing for the inclusion of the so-called "state-to-state" description in the Constitution, not promoting a referendum to change the status quo in regards to the question of independence or unification, and not raising the issue of abolishing the National Unification Council or the Guidelines for National Unification) in his inauguration and announced to cease the National Unification Council or the Guidelines for National Unification.

Due to his tricks with words between 'abolishing' and 'ceasing', the US reacted mildly at the beginning, but later it realized Chen Shui-bian's tricks. Although the US didn't say much about this openly, Chen's credibility in the US political circle has lost. Chen's previous remarks when he went through the US also made the latter realize that his so-called transit in the US was not just a short stay, but was to promote his 'pro-independence' diplomacy. Therefore, the US does not want to provide a 'Taiwan independence' platform for him any more.

US former Secretary of State Colin Powell confirmed such a stance in an interview. "No matter it is a mild reaction or strong reaction'. I will let the administration speak for itself. But I think that there is no question that the United States is not in any way trying to encourage or being positively inclined toward any independence movement. We have been very clear about this."

It's quite obvious that the US government didn't let Chen go through America means it does not trust him. And he deserved this. When Chen Shui-bian tried to see if he could go through Alaska, the US government said he must apply in a formal written form 72 hours ahead. Only then will the US government consider it. This has shown that the trust on Chen has completely lost.

As for his self-claimed 'strong man image', it is even more ridiculous. After he set off, his followers said Chen's change of itinerary was to show that he no long wanted to be the 'adopted son of the US'. Such words are not only very indecent, but it almost admits that Chen Shui-bian has always thought he WAS the US adopted son. He seemed to be tough this time.

However who can imagine that even in the presidential inauguration, Chen neglected rituals and went to Laura Bush who was still giving applause and sort of forcing to shake hands with her in order to take a photo with her. According to western customs, it is usually woman who take initiative to shake hands with a man. Chen's such an abrupt behavior exposed his humility.

He thought he was clever to play such a farce and make fund of America, but he has been too clever to be trusted. He can no longer be trusted and has no decency at all in the eyes of the US government and many other people.
