China's urban fixed asset investment up 29.6% in first four months

China's urban fixed asset investment grew 29.6 percent in the first four months of 2006 from the same period a year ago, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Thursday.

The total fixed asset investment in urban areas amounted to 1.8 trillion yuan (225 billion U.S. dollars) during the January-April period, the bureau said in a monthly report.

The investment by the central government grew 18.8 percent year on year to 190.5 billion yuan, while that by local governments surged by 31.1 percent to 1.61 trillion yuan.

China's total fixed assets investments amounted to 8.86 trillion yuan in 2005, a rise of 25.7 percent from the same period a year earlier.
