The special UN envoy in Sudan on Saturday emphasized the need for the Sudanese government to comply with the Darfur peace agreement and in particular with the stipulation of disarming militia accused of committing atrocities in the three-year conflict in western region of Darfur.
Jan Pronk, who is ending a three-day visit to the West Darfur State, said that the Sudanese government pledged to come up with a plan to disarm the Janjaweed militia within 37 days after signing the agreement.
He called on Darfur residents to support the peace deal signed between Khartoum and a main rebel faction on May 5, according to a statement issued by the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS).
"You must accept and support the peace agreement in order to achieve peace and security, regain your rights, get your fair share of power, receive compensation and attain reconstruction," Pronk told a rally in a refugee camp in Mournei.
The displaced, however, appealed to Pronk for immediate deployment of U.N. peacekeeping forces in Darfur to provide security, food and other relief supplies, the UNMIS statement said.
