At least five people including two militants were killed and 14 others injured in a terror attack on a Congress party rally in Srinagar, capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir Sunday afternoon.
The attack took place minutes before the scheduled arrival of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was to address the rally at the Sher-e-Kashmir Park in the heart of the city. The rally was held to mark the 15th death anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
"One policeman and two civilians died in the attack. Two police officers including Inspector General of Police Rajendra Kumar were wounded in the attack. At least 14 civilians were also injured," Indo-Asian News Service quoted a police officer as saying.
Two fidayeen guerrillas stormed into the heavily guarded venue and hurled hand grenades as well as opened indiscriminate fire from automatic weapons on the people assembled there, the officer said.
They also fired at the stage where several senior Congress leaders including ministers were present, he said.
Security forces soon evacuated those assembled at the venue, cordoned off the park and engaged the two attackers in a gun battle, killing both of them, the officer added.
The injured had been taken to hospital, said the officer.
