Annan names pine tree at E. China's renowned Huangshan mountain

Visiting UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Sunday named a pine tree "Umbrella Pine" on Mount Huangshan, a famous tourist site in East China.

Annan toured Mount Huangshan, a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, and the nearby Xidi village, a well-preserved ancient village and also a World Cultural Heritage site.

There are tens of thousands of pine trees on Mount Huangshan, according to the tour guide accompanying Annan. However, only a few of them have been named.

Annan stopped at a pine tree shaped like an open umbrella along the mountain path and asked whether it could be named "Umbrella Pine". Mayor of Huangshan City Li Hongming happily accepted Annan's suggestion.

Upon leaving the mountain, Annan wrote the name on a paper and also signed his name on it.
