Beijing consumes 620 mln tons of water in Q1

Beijing consumed 14.487 million tons of standard coal in the first quarter, up 3.7 percent over the same period of last year, and 620 million cubic meters of water, an increase of 5.9 percent, according to statistics released by Beijing Bureau of Statistics on May 21. The economy displayed a trend of sound circulation.

In the first quarter, the GDP increase reached to 13.3 percent, much higher than that of energy and water consumption. The statistics showed that the energy consumption of per 10,000 yuan of GDP (gross domestic product) (current price) decreased by 8.5 percent to 0.86 tons of coal and the water consumption of per 10,000 yuan of GDP (current price) declined by 6.5 per cent to 37 cubic meters.

In the first quarter, the energy consumption of the primary industry decreased by 3 percent to 226,000 tons of coal, that of the secondary industry increased by 2.9 percent to 7.106 million tons, and that of the tertiary industry rose by 4.3 percent to 4.357 million tons and the energy consumed by residents grew by 5.4 percent to 2.798 million tons.

In the first quarter, the city's electricity consumption came to 5.73 billion kW/h and the industrial added value of per 10,000 yuan of electricity consumption (current price) decreased by 9.6 percent compared to the same period of last year, calculated on constant price.

The Outline of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan laid down clearly that we must stick to the harmonious and sustainable way in developing economy, and make efforts to reduce the energy and water consumption of per 10,000 yuan of GDP by 15 and 20 percent respectively by 2010, compared to that at the end of the Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005). The Bureau will continue to release related statistics on a quarterly basis.
