Chinese police to step up cooperation with ASEAN countries

The Chinese police will further strengthen its cooperation with its counterparts in the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN) in a bid to jointly forge a mechanism for closer regional law enforcement cooperation, a senior Chinese official said in Kualalumpuron Tuesday.

Cooperation between the police authorities between China and ASEAN countries has been intensified constantly in recent years and gratifying results have been achieved in their joint endeavor to smash crimes, said Zhang Xinfeng, Vice Minister of the Public Security of the People's Republic of China.

The two sides have cracked many major criminal cases with concerted efforts, he told a session after the 26 ASEANPOL Conference opened here this morning, which was attended by the national police chiefs of the ASEAN's ten member countries.

Zhang also spoke highly of the unceasing efforts made by the ASEANPOL since its inception in 1981 to promote information exchange and law enforcement cooperation between the police authorities in the region.

The Chinese delegation led by Zhang is attending the annual ASEAN police chief gathering as an observer. China first participated in the event as an observer in 2005 at the 25th ASEANPOL Conference in Indonesia.

Delegates from Australia, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and New Zealand also were present at the conference as observers.

After the opening of the 26 ASEANPOL Conference, ASEAN officially launched an ASEAN Database System to promote information sharing and exchanges and better their efforts in cracking crimes in the region.
