Businessman shot dead in Johannesburg

A Chinese businessman was killed in an armed robbery in South Africa on Monday, the Xinhua News Agency has reported.

Xu Ruichong became the sixth Chinese to be murdered in South Africa so far this year when he was gunned down in Johannesburg.

Xu, 43, was shot dead as he and his wife tried to flee from robbers, according to Zhang Hongjie, vice-chairman of the chamber of commerce of Nantong town fellows of Jiangsu Province in South Africa.

The couple were attacked when their car stopped at a crossing.

Nearly 30 town fellows from Jiangsu rushed to the scene of the killing to help deal with the aftermath of Xu's death.

Xu had come to Johannesburg in 1998 from East China's Zhejiang Province to trade in wholesale curtains and bedclothes.

Officials with the Chinese Embassy in South Africa also visited the scene to express their condolences to relatives of Xu.

Earlier this month, Liu, a Chinese woman born in South Africa, was shot dead during a robbery at her home in Johannesburg.

And last Sunday, 22-year-old Chen Meihua from East China's Fujian Province, was shot in the head by armed robbers in Johannesburg. She is still in a critical condition.

In February, three Chinese were robbed and killed in two days in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Li Zhiwei, 33, was killed last Friday in Moscow.

The Russian police are investigating the case but the three suspects are still believed to be at large.
