Serbia-Montenegro FM criticizes EU for adopting close-door policy
font size

Serbia-Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic criticized the European Union (EU) on Thursday for refusing to let Serbia join the bloc, according to the reports from Tallinn, capital of Estonia.

Draskovic blamed the EU for not accepting Serbia as part of the 25-nation bloc, saying that Serbia cannot understand why the EU is afraid of them. He reiterated that Serbia is willing to join the EU.

The EU closed its door to Serbia because the country failed to meet an April 30 deadline to hand over Gen. Ratko Mladic to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.

Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet held talks with Draskovic on the same day. Both sides discussed the situation in the Balkan region, especially the Kosovo region.

Paet said once results of the independence referendum came out, Estonia was ready to acknowledge the independence of Montenegro.

Draskovic arrived in Tallinn on Thursday, kicking off a two-day official visit to Estonia. He would meet with Estonian President Arnold Ruutel and Prime Minister Andrus Ansip during the visit.
