CAN to hold emergency summit in Ecuador
font size

The Andean Community of Nations (CAN) will hold an emergency summit in Quito, the capital of Ecuador on June 13 at the request of Bolivia, CAN's chief Alan Wagner said on Friday.

"Bolivia's Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca has just sent us an official letter in which Bolivia's President Evo Morales calls for a meeting of the presidential council and foreign ministers," Wagner said.

CAN member states, including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, will discuss the political situation of the bloc after Venezuela's recent withdrawal in response to Colombia and Peru signing free trade deals with the United States.

The agenda includes a Bolivian request for Washington to extend the Andean Preferential Tariffs Accord, and the progress of the negotiations with the European Union for an association agreement, which were begun in Vienna during the May 11-13 EU-Latin America summit.
