Australia has announced a total of 3 million Australian dollars (2.25 million U.S. dollars) in aid to help survivors of an earthquake that shook Indonesia Saturday.

Australia offered 1 million dollars (0.75 million U.S. dollars) in emergency aid to aid agencies on Saturday and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer announced an extra 2 million dollars (1.5 million U.S. dollars) on Sunday.

More than 3,000 people were killed and thousands injured in the quake that struck the area around the city of Yoguakarta, on the main island of Java.

Downer told the Nine Network TV that the government has sent three teams to Java to investigate the scene of the quake and gauge the level of support needed.

"We are looking at what we can do to help, it may be that we'll have to do quite a lot," he said.
