Nepal to invite UN's involvement in peace process
font size

The Nepali government will "soon" send a formal letter to the United Nations (UN) inviting it to play a role in the peace process, following an agreement with the guerrilla and India's green signal on UN involvement in Nepal.

A highly-placed source was quoted by Tuesday's The Kathmandu Post as saying that the government, the guerrilla and India have agreed on two key areas for UN involvement, but "some" differences remain in a third area.

According to the newspaper, the three areas identified for UN involvement are: (1) cease-fire monitoring, (2) assisting in decommissioning of guerrilla arms and demobilization of the guerrilla militia prior to Constituent Assembly elections, and (3) "witnessing" of the ongoing government-guerrilla talks through the UN's physical presence.

Differences remain only on the third issue, according to the report.

The source said that the government is hopeful that India will eventually agree on the third issue as well.

"The government is eagerly waiting for India's green signal on this," he said.
