China's top legislator Wu Bangguo's four-nation visit to Romania, Moldova, Greece and Russia was fruitful, strengthening political trust, and economic and parliamentary cooperation, said a senior official who was among the entourage.
Cao Weizhou, the Deputy Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said the visit was productive in many ways.
The tour by Wu, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, boosted political trust between China and the four nations visited, Cao said.
He said Wu had thanked the four countries, all traditional friends of China, for their support on such issues as Taiwan, Tibet and human rights.
"Wu emphasized that the aim of the tour is to further strengthen relations with these countries," Cao said, adding that the leaders of the four countries all commented positively on their relations with China.
The promotion of trade and economic cooperation was another important objective of the tour, said Cao. He noted that Wu had offered constructive advice on developing bilateral trade of mutual benefit.
"Wu highlighted the key role of enterprises in trade and economic cooperation, and the need to promote cooperation on large-scale projects," Cao said.
The visit also strengthened exchanges between China's NPC and parliaments of the four nations Wu visited, said Cao.
During Wu's visit, he discussed with his counterparts ways to boost cooperation in the field of legislation, intensify exchanges in the field of humanities, and enhance coordination and cooperation in international and regional parliamentary organizations.
"Parliamentary leaders of the four countries said the suggestions were in line with the need of parliamentary cooperation," Cao said.
Wu, who started his four-nation tour on May 17, also attended on Tuesday in Moscow the first meeting of parliament speakers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states.
During the meeting, top legislators from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan exchanged views and reached consensus on developing SCO and enhancing inter-parliamentary cooperation among the six member states, Cao said.
The speakers also issued a joint statement at the end of the meeting, speaking positively of the achievements attained since the establishment of the SCO five years ago.
The speakers said inter-parliamentary cooperation constitutes an important part of the cooperation within the group, pledging that their legislatures will play a more active role in providing legal safeguards for cooperation among member states in all fields.
